Camera shots

There are a number of standardized camera shots (or frames), the names of which are commonly derived from varying camera-subject distances.

     This camera shots are:
  • the long shot: plano general
  • the full shot: plano entero
  • the medium full shot (also known as American shot because of its frequent use in westerns. This was because a shot that started at knee level would reveal the weapon of a cowboy, usually holstered at his waist): Plano Americano
  • the medium shot: plano medio
  • the close-up: primer plano
  • the extreme close up: primerĂsimo primer plano o plano detalle
There are other variants, such as the medium close up (between medium and close up), etc.

flashmob: Rembrandt

A Flashmob recreates Rembrandt's painting, The Nightwatcher, in a Dutch shopping mall.
A culturally-minded group staged a high-art flashmob to celebrate the return of Rembrandt Van Rijn’s famous painting The Night Watch to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

The nightwatch by Rembrandt

Rembrandt’s painting was completed in 1642 and depicts Captain Frans Banning Cocq and his lieutenant, Willem van Ruytenburch, leading out their city guard. The Rijksmuseum is due to reopen on April 13th following a 10-year renovation.

Portraits: Silhouettes

Remember that we already know what a silohuette is: it is the image of a person, an object or scene represented as a solid shape of a single colour, usually black, its edges matching the outline of the subject (Wikipedia).

So let's put it into practice!!!

  1. We will tape a paper to the wall and had them sit in a chair showing our profile.
  2. A light will throw a shadow on the paper (wait or coloured) that we will trace with a pencil
  3. We will cut along the line to get our silhouette.
  4. If we want the silhouette to be black, we will have to trace it again on a black paper. Or, you could also want it painted on a canvas, then you could paint the head or the background.
